Why Garba Feels Like Home

Garba so much more music. It’s history, it’s community and it’s Navratri in full swing. It is basically a folk dance rooted in devotion, traditionally danced in concentric circles to honour the Divine Feminine, or Mother Goddess, especially during the nine nights of Navaratri. 

As someone who grew up Gujarati, that circular rhythm isn’t just sound but my core-memory. Being a DJ and bringing that tradition into a continuous, two-hour DJ format felt like a personal rite of passage.

And now Garba isn’t only a Gujarati thing anymore.

Thanks to diaspora communities in the UK, USA, and beyond. Garba nights have become massive cultural gatherings, blending tradition with modern music sensibilities. 

UNESCO has even recognised Garba as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, celebrating it as much more than just dance music. 

Why Its Personal and Universal

People think DJs make mixes for gigs, clubs or festivals. But the truth is, some of the best mixes come from the heart, for the heart.

This Garba mix is me, as a Gujarati, as an Indian, as someone who grew up watching the tempo climb every Navratri night, standing barefoot, palms touched together to pray to goddess, and losing track of time altogether.

And I wanted to give that feeling, not just to people in India, but to Gujarati and South Asian communities in the UK, Europe, USA, and beyond who might be listening on YouTube right now.
