Finding Voice Through Beats
Not every life changes with a big moment.
Some times, it changes with a simple question.
Mine started with this one:
“Can DJing give someone a voice, even if they struggle to speak?”
That question walked into my life in the form of a young man named Abhishek Patel, liked to be called as Abhi.
And it ended up becoming one of the most meaningful chapters of my journey.
I first met Abhishek as a shy, quiet student.
He was physically challenged and had difficulty speaking clearly. Conversations weren’t easy for him. In most cases, he would disappear into the background. But music was something that felt close to him, that felt real.
DJing doesn’t need perfect speech. It just needs perfect passion and Abhi had that in abundance. Most people looked at him and saw challenges and for me, as much as I understood of him, I saw a future DJ.
At boom shankar projekt DJ Academy, I’ve trained many students, from beginners to aspiring professionals across the globe. But Abhi was different.
I decided early on that I wouldn’t treat him as a “special case.”
I would treat him as a future artist.
We worked on beat matching, rhythm sense, track selection, mixing techniques and crowd understanding. And of course, more importantly, we worked on belief.
Because DJing is more like self-expression and technical skills combined. Abhi needed someone to tell him that his expression matters.
From Challenges to Confidence
The journey wasn’t easy. There were days he struggled. Couple of moments he doubted himself and times when learning took longer than usual, very longer. But Abhi had something no disability could touch. And that is determination.
He practiced harder than anyone.
Showed up earlier than others.
Repeated lessons without complaint.
And slowly, the shy boy started transforming into “DJ Abhi.”
The First Time He Played Live
I’ll never forget his first real performance. Watching him behind the decks, controlling the music, making people dance, it hit me emotionally.
Here was someone who once struggled to speak in public, now communicating effortlessly with a room full of people. DJing gave Abhi the voice he never had.
Today: Abhi the Professional DJ
Fast forward to now. Abhi is no longer just my student.
He is a working DJ, earning independently, playing events and shows and building his own identity in the industry. From a hesitant learner at BSP DJ Academy, he has become a professional artist in his own right.
And every time I see him succeed, I’m reminded why I teach.
Abhi’s journey represents everything I believe in. I want to make DJing inclusive. I want to open doors for people others overlook and use music as a tool for empowerment to prove that creativity has no physical barriers
I really believe that talent isn’t limited by physical challenges. Any opportunity can change a life and music can be a profession for anyone with passion.
And for me, that’s the real legacy I sure want to celebrate playing sets, but transform lives at the same time. Abhi once struggled to find his voice. Today, he doesn’t need one. Because the crowd hears him loud and clear, through his music.
And that, for me, is the most beautiful remix of all.
